Batch and Event Analysis

Increase production by improving process repeatability.

OSIsoft helps you get the right batch information to the right decision makers

OSIsoft’s Batch software is based on the PI System family of software products that are part of the leading Real-time Performance Management (RtPM) Platform. The PI System integrates batch information with other data from your enterprise to help your people make the most intelligent business decisions and improve your batch and other event-driven operations.

While the Batch products from OSIsoft help industries such as chemical and pharmaceutical track and analyze batches, it is also widely used in traditionally non-batch applications, where it can identify and track process events. Sequences such as events in discrete manufacturing, paper reels, steel coils, product or grade changes, turbine startups, and lab runs can be defined and recorded with our Batch products.

OSIsoft helps companies improve batch efficiency by:

- Reducing cycle times
- Increasing product consistency
- Compliance with the FDA regulation 21 CFR Part 11
- Improving process repeatability
- Identifying process bottlenecks

Most processes have repeatable time segments or stages. PI Batch identifies these process stages and measures their repeatability. PI Batch provides the capability to track and store batch and other process-based events in the PI System. These events can be hierarchically identified as Batches, Unit Batches, or Sub Batches. Data from PI Batch are displayed in its companion client application, PI BatchView.

Realize your ideal batch and repeat it

Large manufacturing enterprises often run thousands of batches in a matter of days. If you can reduce cycle times and increase product consistency, the process is improved and production is increased. The task is difficult considering the multitude of variables within any one batch, operation or phase that can result in product variations. Such inconsistency leads to varying quality and decreased production.

OSIsoft helps you to achieve your ideal batch

With process standards based on an ideal batch, production is increased with more consistent, efficient batch operations. You can more easily identify, frame and analyze batch process data based on a scheduled time or process event. Having more process intelligence enables you to pinpoint operating conditions that produce more precise batches.

OSIsoft products provide tools that improve batch efficiencies

- PI Server for batch history
- Interfaces to Batch Execution Systems
- PI BatchView including trends, Gantt charts, and reporting via Excel™
- PI ProcessTemplates for statistical repeatability analysis
- RtReports for batch reporting
- ProcessPoint for product lifecycle analysis
- PI OLEDB data provider for relational views and queries of batches

Technical Overview

In traditional batch applications, the batch events are mapped directly to the Physical and Procedural Models of the ISA S88.01 Standard for Batch Terminology. Transfer records can be applied to provide a connection between Batches, Unit Batches, and/or physical equipment for full product traceability. A rich COM presentation and ODBC connectivity allow many third-party products the ability to utilize PI Batch information.

With the use of the Audit Trail, PI Batch and the PI System become an integral component of a validated reporting environment in compliance with 21 CFR Part 11.

PI Batch works closely with its companion client application, PI BatchView. BatchView can be applied to search for events based on paper reels, lab runs, events in discrete manufacturing, etc. PI BatchView provides the search capability that is applied by the PI client products to search for the required events and retrieve these events from the PI System to conduct detailed analysis and process comparison.

Users can specify the PI BatchMonitor to associate any process tag as the indicator of the start or end of a batch. Thus, systems that do not have dedicated batch execution systems can still detect and monitor batches.

PI Batch can also be used to generate Batch ID and Product codes, associating process conditions with the batches. The database may be searched for specific batches or groups of batches. These search results may then be used to view PI DataStorage data in the context of selected batches.
